SUNRISE FROM A VOLCANO

Saturday Morning

We were up waaay before the sun this morning. With our 2:45am wake up call on a Saturday, we figured we were up even before people back home in Indiana who are 6 hours ahead of us!! The reason for such an insanely early morning? Sunrise at Haleakala Crater :)

Haleakala is a dormant volcano on Maui and it is a huge event to see the sunrise from it. Thing is, everyone knows this so it gets packed at the summit EARLY. So therefore we had to be up soon enough to drive the hour and a half to the summit and we got one of the last parking spots left!!

By 5am the sky started to get light...

We went into an observation area with a bunch of people for a while. It was nice because it blocked the wind (it was 40 degrees up there!!!) but it was over-crowded and you couldn't see that well.

We moved to a little cliff overhang and had much better, more secluded views of the sunrise.

Despite the cold it was such an amazing experience. The sun coming up over the clouds was unlike anything I have ever seen!

After the sun was up we drove down to Kula Lodge restaurant which was not even open yet it was still so early! We napped in the car a bit until the place opened for breakfast.

This restaurant sits on the side of Haleakala and has great views! Not to mention great food :)

Zach got a big cinnamon raisin french toast (with coconut syrup!!)
And I ordered 2 eggs, cottage fries, english muffin and portuguese sausage.
Of course we shared everything! We really enjoyed this breakfast place!
